Those who argued that the video assistant referee is killing the excitement of the game will have another point after watching Mexico beat Panama in the CONCACAF Nations League third-place match.

Mexico were beaten 3-0 by arch-rivals USA in the semi-final, while Canada beat Panama 2-0 in the other semi-final to set up cracking encounters in the final rounds.

Jesus Gallardo opened the scoring for El Tri in the fourth minute of the game, and they were able to hold on for the victory against their North American counterparts.

According to Sports Illustrated, USA retained their title after beating Canada with two first-half goals from Folarin Balogun and Chris Richards, both of whom scored their first international goals.

VAR rules out stunning goal

The biggest drama of the game came in the 56th minute when Panama were awarded a free kick. They pulled off one of the most confusing and comical routines.

As spotted in a video by CBS Sports Golazo, it was a straight from the training ground technique which ended with Anibal Godoy sending an overhead kick into the net.

It also produced a beautiful celebration in which the players sat on the touchline lining up behind each other, only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR after Godoy was adjudged to be in an offside position during the passage of play.

The Nashville SC star was in disbelief and protested to the referee, which earned him a yellow card.

Aurier scores worldie own goal

Sports Brief reported that former Tottenham star Serge Aurier scored an own goal for Ivory Coast from 25 yards out in the AFCON qualifier against Zambia.

The Nottingham Forest defender tried intercepting a defence-splitting pass, but the ball cannoned off his foot and above the helpless goalkeeper.

The Ivorians lost the game 3-0, and fans on social media pounced on the erratic Premier League star.
