- He has now taken his tally to 17 goals in 25 matches as he inches closer to Rashidi Yekini’s record
Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen is inching closer to Rashidi Yekini’s all-time goals record for the Super Eagles.
The 24-year-old Napoli of Italy striker netted a brace in Nigeria’s 3-2 win over Sierra Leone in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The victory confirms Nigeria’s place at the 2023 edition of the continental showpiece, which starts in Ivory Coast next January.
It was Osimhen’s 25th appearance for the Nigerian national team, having made his debut back in 2017.
And it took the former Lille of France striker 19 minutes to open the scoring for his side when he lobbed the ball past the goalkeeper.
In the 32nd minute, the striker tucked home Nigeria’s second goal after he was left unmarked in the box to extend his side’s lead.
Sierra Leone fought back and pulled one back just before halftime courtesy of a Mustapha Bundu strike, and then Augustus Kargbo fired home in the 84th minute to make it 2-2.
However, substitute Kelechi Iheanacho had other plans as he tucked home the winner for Nigeria with virtually the last kick of the game in stoppage time. It ended; Sierra Leone 2-3 Nigeria.
Nigeria have now confirmed their place at the next AFCON tournament as they top the group with 12 points.
Also confirming their place are the Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau, who have 10 points, while Sierra Leone are on 5 points and will not participate in the next continental showpiece.
Osimhen set sights on Yekini's record
Meanwhile, following his brace against the Leone Stars, Osimhen has now taken his tally to 17 goals as he continues to chase the all-time scoring record set by the legendary Rashidi Yekini.
