  • Jose Luis Chilavert argues Kylian Mbappe will not thrive in South America
  • Chilavert's assessment of Mbappe comes from the Frenchman's previous criticism
  • The ex-Paraguayan goalkeeper is the second-highest-scoring goalkeeper of all time with 54 goals

Retired Chilean goalkeeper, Jose Luis Chilavert, holds the belief that Kylian Mbappe would struggle to excel if he played in South America.

Despite Mbappe's meteoric rise in football, achieving remarkable feats at the young age of 24, including winning the World Cup and becoming PSG's all-time leading scorer with 212 goals, Chilavert, a respected figure in goalkeeping, remains unconvinced about the Frenchman's potential.

Chilavert argues that Mbappe may not be able to replicate his success in South America, challenging his ability to thrive in that particular football environment.

"I would like to see him running at altitude in La Paz or Quito or playing away in Brazil," The Paraguayan said on the Futbol de los grandes radio show as quoted GOAL.
"Here, he would be an average player. He's predictable. Obviously, he has an advantage with his speed, but with a defender bungling his neck, we can control him calmly."

Chilavert's remarks are a response to Mbappe's previous 'unfair' assessment of South American football, where he suggested that European football holds superiority, Euro.dayfr.

Martinez slams Mbappe

In a related publication, Sports Brief reported that Argentina's goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez stoked some fires by criticising Kylian Mbappe for his unfair assessment of South American football just before the 2022 World Cup final.

Martinez revisited previous comments by Mbappe where the 24-year-old appeared to suggest that South American football was not as competitive as European football.

The Aston Villa shot-stopper fired back at the PSG forward, saying that Mbappe can't comment on the league(s) he hasn't played in before.

Mbappe talks PSG future

Sports Brief also reported that Kylian Mbappe has clarified the uncertainty surrounding his future following news of his decision to tell Paris Saint-Germain that he will not be taking up an option to extend his contract until 2025.

Mbappe's current contract with the Ligue 1 champions is set to expire at the conclusion of the season, with a potential extension for an additional year.

However, the Frenchman communicated to PSG via a letter that he unequivocally rejects the prospect of activating the contract's extension clause for an additional year, regardless of the circumstances.
