Percy Tau has continued his recent impressive form but also has the Moroccan goalkeeper to thank for his latest contribution.
The Al Ahly attacker grabbed the headlines during South Africa’s AFCON qualifier as Bafana Bafana took the lead against the Atlas Lions.
While South Africa’s goal didn’t come against the run of play, it did come out of a blunder by Munir Mohamedi.
The Moroccan second-choice keeper attempted to catch the ball from a routine Tau cross, but someone fumbled the ball, which then rolled into the back of the net. While it did come unexpectedly, Bafana were threatening from the start of the game.
Tau had a chance to get in a cross before his goal, but the ball was deflected for a corner.
He then took the resulting short corner and, after a quick exchange with a teammate, lobbed the ball into the box, which caused a problem for the Moroccan shot-stopper.
The goal set the platform for the rest of the game as Bafana relentlessly searched for another. The South African side played a different game than many have seen in recent years and took the fight to Morocco.
Hugo Broos' side grabbed a second goal through Zakhele Lepasa, and not even a Hakim Ziyech goal was enough to deny them all three points.
Lepasa pays tribute to Barker
Bafana Bafana have paid tribute to former coach Clive Barker in the best possible way.
Not only did South Africa beat Morocco in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, but the manner in which they did was also reminiscent of the team coached by The Dog.
Bafana beat The Atlas Lions 2-1 to top Group K, thanks to an own goal by the Moroccan keeper and a Zakhele Lepasa close-range finish, Sports Brief reported.
