  • Victory for the Super Eagles will see them book a place at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast
  • However, the Leone Stars need a maximum three points to keep their hopes of a place at the continental showpiece alive

West African nations Nigeria and Sierra Leone go head-to-head on Sunday, June 18, in a crucial 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The match is slated for the Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia, Liberia, as there are no CAF-approved stadiums in Sierra Leone.

The Leone Stars will need to win the encounter to keep their qualification hopes alive; however, a win for the Super Eagles will guarantee them a place in the continental showpiece.

Preview

Sports Mole reports that Sierra Leone began the qualifying series on a poor note but turned around their fortunes and are still in contention.

They suffered a 2-1 loss to Nigeria in their opening campaign back in June 2022 following goals from Alex Iwobi and Victor Osimhen, who won the crucial three points for the Eagles.

Four days later, John Keister’s side fought back from two goals down to salvage a 2-2 draw against 10-man Guinea Bissau on home soil.

In March, they also came from behind to draw 2-2 with Sao Tome and Principe and then won the reverse leg 2-0 four days later.

They are third in the group, four behind Nigeria; thus, the Leone Stars need all three points against the Eagles to keep their chances alive.

On the other hand, Nigeria opened the qualifying series with a 2-1 win over the Leone Stars and then demolished Sao Tome and Principe 10-0 at the Stade Adrar.

Jose Peseiro’s men lost 1-0 at home to Guinea Bissau before picking up a 1-0 win over the Wild Dogs in the reverse fixture.

The three-time African champions are one point behind first-placed Guinea-Bissau in Group A, albeit with one game in hand, and could seal their spot in Ivory Coast with all three points.
