Going into the final game, Spurs led the standings with nine points while Maritzburg were second with six points.

The KZN side needed to beat Shaun Bartlett’s side to secure their spot in South Africa’s top flight. Spurs, on the other hand, just needed a draw.

Cape Town got that single point as they drew with Maritzburg in the final game of the mini-tournament, with the match ending 0-0. The game proved a tense affair, as both sides didn’t want to make any costly errors.

While there were plenty of tackles and players going down, there was very little goalmouth action. Both sides had 11 shots in total, but only one of those was on target for Spurs, while Maritzburg had no shots on target.

The KZN side will join Marumo Gallants in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, while Spurs join Polokwane City as the two sides go up to the Premiership.

Cupido sent off for Spurs

Refereeing in South African football has again come under the spotlight after Cape Town Spurs’ game against Casric Stars in the promotion playoffs.

The two Motsepe Foundation Championship sides joined Maritzburg United in hunting down the final spot in the DStv Premiership next season.

Spurs were dealt a significant blow during their last game as their star striker, Ashley Cupido was shown a straight red card, Sports Brief reported.

How promotion and relegation works

Sports Brief also explained how DStv Premiership promotion and relegation works as the fight for the final place next season continued.

With the mini-tournament set to decide who secures the final spot in the standings, it remained anyone's guess which team would win.

This past season Maritzburg United, Cape Town Spurs and Casric Stars competed in the promotion playoffs.
