  • Declan Rice will depart West Ham United after helping the club win the Europa Conference League
  • Last season’s Premier League runners-up Arsenal are the likeliest destination for the midfielder
  • English pundit Jamie Carragher has warned about the potential downside of joining the Gunners

Jamie Carragher is not mincing words with a brutal assessment of the potential transfer of West Ham United midfielder, Declan Rice to Arsenal this summer.

West Ham chairman, David Sullivan confirmed the 24-year-old asked to leave after captaining the club to the UEFA Europa Conference League triumph over Fiorentina in Prague.

The Gunners are the likeliest to secure his signature, but there is also interest from Chelsea, Manchester United, and German champions Bayern Munich, currently managed by former Blues boss, Thomas Tuchel.

Carragher sends warning to Rice

According to Sky Sports, West Ham value Rice at £120 million, but will be willing to negotiate with a Champions League club for less than £100mil plus a player.

Liverpool legend, Carragher shared his thoughts on the transfer and praised Rice as a player that immediately upgrades the Gunners’ midfield.

‘‘I always felt he [Rice] would end up at Chelsea, but he could go to Arsenal, and it could go great for him. He’s a step up from what they’ve got,” he told Metro UK.
“But there is no guarantee he will go on to win the biggest trophies with them. Unless you go to Man City, there is no guarantee you are going to come out with the trophies that you want.”

Mikel Arteta helped the club qualify for the Champions League for the first time in seven years, which Carragher feels is a cause for caution if a player is moving because of European football.

“The tough question for Arsenal heading into next season is whether this was a one-off or whether they can be consistent and challenging the biggest sides because it hasn’t happened for a long time,” he added.

Trippier rates Rice highly

Sports Brief reported that Newcastle captain, Kieran Trippier rates Rice highly and ahead of former La Liga midfielders, Casemiro and Thomas Partey.

He said the other two may have won trophies, but at the moment, his compatriot is the best at what he does and is ahead of the Man United and Arsenal stars.
