Following his omission from the Super Eagles in 2022, Awoniyi returned to the Nigerian team for the first time and he is expected to compete with Victor Osimhen for a starting lineup in the game against Sierra Leone.

Awoniyi gears up for Sierra Leone

"That is how I see every Super Eagles game, and that’s the kind of spirit I will take to the game if I get to Liberia.
"This is a game that you have to put in your best because you only have 90 minutes to play. Perhaps, the next time you play again in September or thereabout.
"Of course, Nigerians should not expect anything other than victory. Because looking at the caliber of players that we have in the team, these are players that have done well for their club sides, and I hope that we can bring home the same spirit that we have from our club sides.''

Awoniyi scored against Arsenal

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Taiwo Awoniyi disclosed that his Premier League goal against Arsenal last season was the most satisfying of his career so far as a professional footballer.

The former Liverpool player had a brilliant season with Nottingham Forest netting 10 Premier League goals and he also helped the club to escape relegation.

Awoniyi and his teammates did not start the season well, but they ended up maintaining their status in the English top flight for another term.

The former Liverpool player is currently in Lagos where he and other Super Eagles players have started preparation for the coming AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone which will be tough.
