Enyimba Football Club are champions of the 2022/2023 Nigeria Professional Football League season, following their 1-1 draw against Rivers United on Sunday, June 11.
It was the final match of the Super 6 competition in Lagos, and the People's Elephants battled hard to claim the prestigious title for the ninth time in their history.
Ekene Awazie opened the scoring for the Aba-based club in the 39th minute, but Rivers United restored parity courtesy of Nyima Nwagua in almost no time.
Both teams battled hard to grab the winner but somehow were not able to find the back of the net, ultimately sharing the spoils once the final whistle blew.
However, Enyimba FC finished top of the Super 6 playoffs with nine points, the same as Remo Stars and Rivers United but with a superior goal difference, as Vanguard reports.
For finishing top, the team - coached by Super Eagles legend, Finidi George - won the giant trophy, N100 million and a ticket to the CAF Champions League.
Remo Stars ended second on the log and will also compete in the CAF CL for the first time in their history, while the dethroned Rivers United will have to drop to the CAF Confederation Cup.
George led Enyimba to his first title as manager after a disappointing outing last season.
Enyimba claim Abia FA Cup
Sports Brief previously reported on former Super Eagles winger, George leading Enyimba to victory in the final of the 2023 Abia State FA Cup on March 12.
En route to the final of the cup competition, Ahudiya had defeated Abia Warriors in their semi-final and fans seemed to expect a similar result against Enyimba.
Even though they are a non-league side, George lined up his first-team players against Ahudiya, and his tactics paid off - with Enyimba netting four goals.
