FootballMichael Olunga: Kenyan International Responds to Rumours Linking Him to Everton
- The transfer rumour mill recently linked Michael Olunga to Premier League outfit Everton
- Olunga has had a brief stint in Europe’s top five leagues with Girona in Spain
- But the Harambee Stars striker played down rumours, saying he does not control what is being reported
Kenyan striker Michael Olunga had a clever answer when asked about rumours linking him with a move to Everton.
Olunga is a top marksman, who has made a name for himself in Japan and Qatar, having won league titles in both countries’ leagues.
His current contract with Qatari side Al Duhail is coming to an end, and this has led to an interesting transfer rumour claiming The Toffees are interested in his services.
Everton barely survived the relegation dogfight in the 2022/23 season, and it took the intervention of former Burnley boss Sean Dyche to pull off a great escape.
The Merseyside will surely be looking to bolster their squad to be more competitive, particularly in attack as goals proved to be the most challenging area in their game in the just concluded season.
Olunga, who is back with the Harambee Stars players, was quizzed on links to Everton, and his answer was coy.
"I can't say so much at the moment,” he said as seen in a video shared by @kisengemeshack1 on Twitter.
“I think it's time for me to focus on the national team duties ahead of us and relax following the tough season I have had in Qatar. It was fantastic for me winning three top scorer's awards in different competitions.”
"I feel amazing, I feel I did a great job. Normally, I don't like to speculate on some things, for I can control what is within my jurisdiction which is playing football. Whatever happens behind the scenes between the clubs and management is beyond my control.”
"I'm not going anywhere": Kounde dispels Barcelona exit rumours
FootballOlunga started out in his native Kenya, playing for Tusker FC, Thika United and Gor Mahia, before securing a move to Sweden to join Djurgården in 2016.
It was his stint at Japanese side Kashiwa Reysol, however, that Olunga made a proper name for himself, and he memorably scored eight goals as the team demolished Kyoto Sanga 13-1.
Last season, he won the Golden Boot in the Qatari league after scoring 22 goals for Al Duhail, as seen on Transfermkt.
Awoniyi settles patients’ hospital bills
Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported on how Nottingham Forest star Taiwo Awoniyi visited the Ilorin General Hospital on June 8 and settled several patients’ hospital bills.
The former Liverpool player was received by the hospital's Chief Medical Director, Dr Bola Abdulkadir, and was taken to visit the various wards of the hospital, including being introduced to a female cancer patient in need of help.
After receiving a brief about the patient, Awoniyi was told the woman needed a complete dose of a particular treatment costing 229 dollars each, after which he paid for her remaining four doses.
