FootballUECL Final: Fiorentina Captain Cut Open by Objects From West Ham Fans
- The final of the UEFA Europa Conference League descended into chaos
- Fiorentina captain Cristiano Biraghi was cut open by objects thrown at him by West Ham fans
- The two club fans clashed before the game, and it required police intervention to calm things
The UEFA Europa Conference League final between West Ham and Fiorentina is looked more like a street fest than a football final.
The two sides met at the Eden Arena in Prague, Czech Republic, to determine the sophomore winner of the competition after overcoming AZ Alkmaar and FC Basel in the semi-final.
According to talkSPORT, Fiorentina captain Cristiano Biraghi was hit on the head by broken bottles and lighters thrown at him by the English fans in the first half.
He had to be attended to by medics and had his head taped with a purple band before continuing the match, leading to a few minutes of delay in the first half.
He was not the only player attacked. Nico Gonzalez was also hit by an object, but the Spaniard sarcastically applauded the English fans instead.
Emerson Palmieri makes history
Sports Brief reported that Emerson Palmieri made history after winning the Conference League. He became the first player to complete the European treble.
He won the Europa League and Champions League at Chelsea in 2019 and 2021 respectively and adds the UEFA Super Cup and European Championship with Italy to it.
The only other person to achieve this feat is Jose Mourinho who completed the treble after winning the inaugural Conference League with AS Roma last year.
Fans clash before kickoff
Sports Brief reported that West Ham and Fiorentina fans clashed before the game and required police intervention to calm the situation.
The ultras of the Italian clubs reportedly started the incident after cussing at the London club fans, leading to a brawl with chairs and bottles flying everywhere.
It was not the first time violent scenes have been witnessed in the competition this season. AZ Alkmaar ultras attacked the friends and families of West Ham players in the semi-final, forcing players to jump into the crowd.
