  • Ivan Toney was banned for eight months and fined £50,000 for breaching betting rules
  • He was also prohibited from training until the first four months of his ban have lapsed
  • The English striker is already looking for alternative means to keep his fitness levels up

Ivan Toney is assessing the options for keeping his fitness levels up during his eight-month ban for breaching betting rules, the first four months of which he is prohibited from training.

Toney was alleged to have breached 262 of the FA betting rules, with 30 of those charges later dropped after further investigation by authorities.

He was given an eight-month ban which will run till January 16, 2024, handed a fine of £50,000, and has also been barred from training with his club, Brentford for the first four months of the suspension.

According to The Athletic, he could have bagged a 15-month ban, but he avoided the lengthier ban due to his genuine remorse and previous good conduct.

Toney devises training Plan B

The cruelest drawback of his suspension is the inability to train for four months, which could make him lose fitness and affect his career in the long run.

According to Sun Sport, the 26-year-old could join a rugby team for pre-season ahead of his return to training on September 17, as their core fitness training regime is fundamentally similar to football.

Brentford boss, Thomas Frank and England national team head coach, Gareth Southgate both frowned at the ban on training, claiming it is not the best rehabilitation process to leave him out of the football community.

The suspension has also affected his future, as he might have sealed a move away from the Gtech Stadium this summer, with Chelsea previously interested in making him their number 9.

Toney issues six-word tweet

Sports Brief reported that Ivan Toney broke his silence after the FA published written reasons for his ban, which included his being diagnosed with betting addiction.

The Brentford player released a six-word tweet that stated he would 'speak soon with no filter', but he has yet to speak since the publication of the report about him.
