  • Marco Asensio is set to be on the move in the summer window
  • The Real Madrid forward's deal expires at the end of the season
  • Los Blancos are now in the market to sign Asensio's replacement

Marco Asensio is reportedly leaving Real Madrid at the end of the season.

Los Blancos are on the hunt for an alternative to replace the Spanish forward this summer after contract talks broke down between the two.

The Mallorcan will leave the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium outfit with his best statistical season to date.

He has a career-high 15 goals and assists in La Liga, is second in the league in goals and assists per 90, and second in goal-creating actions per 90, according to Managing Madrid.

The left-footed playmaker was a valuable squad player whose departure will be a tough blow to Madrid’s depth, even if he isn’t seen as an essential player.

However, Real Madrid could make an upgrade with a long-term view of their own by signing the right replacement.

Sports Brief analyses five possible players for Real Madrid to target.

Moussa Diaby

Before Bayer Leverkusen brought in Xabi Alonso to help them turn things around, Diaby was already playing good football for Die Werkself. He is brave enough to take on defenders and makes a noticeable difference in the final third.

The Frenchman is only 23 years old and has improved in each season he’s played for Leverkusen. This season, he scored nine goals in 33 outings, per Soccerway.

World football has few better up-and-coming left-footed wingers, making Diaby an extremely valuable commodity. Leverkusen know this and won’t sell him for cheap, but when Real Madrid come knocking, moves tend to be made.

Riyad Mahrez

Riyad Mahrez is perhaps the best right-winger in the world right now. Being one of the best technical players in the world, the Algerian international would take to La Liga like a duck takes to water.

He wouldn't cost that much as well, as he has just another year left on his current deal.

And, like Mane, Mahrez is in his 30s, so he wouldn’t directly impede the progress of Rodrygo. If anything, the former Leicester City superstar could teach the Brazilian a thing or two about cutting in from the right.

Serge Gnabry

One of the favourites to join the Galacticos is the former Arsenal starlet. Gnabry appears to be the most secure investment out of all the players featured here.

Although still young, he is already well-known, and if the team decides to bet on him a few years from now, he might also have a resale value.

The only downside to this move is how Rodrygo would fare, since Gnabry will almost certainly start ahead of the Brazilian. However, winning under pressure brings out the best in winners, so this could also be good for both.

Mohamed Salah

Almost every club in Europe, including Real Madrid, would benefit greatly from adding The Egyptian King. But at the same time, there are some issues with a potential move as well.

On one hand, signing Salah is expected to take a significant transfer fee, with his current deal running till the summer of 2025.

On the other hand, the Egyptian will be turning 31 years of age in June. Thus, he would not be expected to make a difference for Real Madrid in the long term.

Sadio Mane

The Senegalese is 30 years of age and still has a couple of years of good football left in him. He recently played a role in helping Bayern Munich win the Bundesliga title for an 11th.

As Sports Brief reported, Mane can play in all three attacking positions and would bring depth to the squad, while his age means he won’t hinder Rodrygo’s progress at Real Madrid.
