FootballGerrard in Line for First Job Since Aston Villa Sacking, Encounters Unlikely Opposition
- Steven Gerrard did not have the best experience during his time as Aston Villa's manager
- He won the Scottish League unbeaten with Rangers before jumping ship to the Midlands
- The Liverpool legend could be in line for his first job since then, but must first overcome an unlikely opposition
Steven Gerrard could be set for a return to management after he was sacked by Aston Villa last October- but he faces unlikely opposition.
The Liverpool legend caught the eye of the world with his managerial skills when he led Rangers to their record 55th Scottish League title, going through the 2020/21 season unbeaten.
Managing in the Premier League is a sought-after challenge by most, and when the opportunity came to manage Aston Villa when Dean Smith was sacked, the 43-year-old embraced it.
But his time at Villa Park lasted just 11 months. He was dismissed 12 games into the 2022/23 season, having won just two games in the season's opening weeks and the club sitting 17th on the table.
Gerrard considered for Leeds job
Leeds United were relegated to the Championship after their final-day 4-1 defeat to Tottenham at Elland Road, even though a win would not have sufficed.
Relegation-avoiding specialist, Sam Allardyce was hired to help the club with just four games to the end of the season, but he picked up only one point from a possible twelve.
As Allardyce signed a short-term contract, Gerrard is seen as a potential replacement, as Villa hope to return to the Premier League as soon as possible. However, The Sun reports that he is receiving opposition from the players.
The Villa players reportedly want the 'Big Boss' Allardyce to continue, as they have enjoyed working with him during his brief spell, alongside his assistants Karl Robinson and Robbie Keane.
According to Metro UK, Gerrard was offered the Poland national team job when Czeslaw Michniewicz left the role after their round of 16 elimination at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
