Former England youth international, Tariq Lamptey has revealed the moment he finally decided he had to switch nationalities.

Lamptey was born in England to Ghanaian parents and represented the European country at youth levels.

However, in June 2022, the 22-year-old decided to play for the country of his parents. He was eventually named in Ghana's squad for the World Cup in Qatar, having made his debut against Brazil in September 2022.

“It was a number of things that went into it but one of them was when I was doing my charity foundation last summer, and you see the people and the amazing feeling that they give you. So that obviously made the decision," Lamptey told Citi FM in Accra.
“To be fair you don’t know what to expect when you come, and it was that time of the decision and like I said it was amazing, and I’m always grateful.”

The Brighton and Hove Albion defender has already made four appearances for the Black Stars, describing his moments with the national team as amazing, as reported by Football Ghana.

“It was amazing, we have a very good team, we have a mixture of some great players in Europe, it was very easy, it was like a family, and we know what we can do," added Lamptey.

The versatile full-back has been out since picking an injury in a Premier League game against West Ham in March, missing the AFCON qualifiers against Angola.

Lamptey is also out of June's Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar.

Schindler replaces injured Lamptey

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that FC Koln winger, Kingsley Schindler has been handed a Black Stars invite following injury to Brighton & Hove Albion defender, Tariq Lamptey.

The German-born player will be making his international debut for Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola.

Schindler arrived in Ghana on Monday and trained with his teammates as preparations started for Thursday's game.
