Barcelona are leaving nothing to chance in their bid to re-sign Lionel Messi this summer, with the Argentine superstar set to become a free agent at the end of the season.
The Catalans have made their interest in the 35-year-old forward public after it was revealed Messi would not renew his contract with Paris Saint-Germain when it expires at the end of the season.
According to Goal, Barcelona is now offering Messi the club’s captain’s armband to lure him back to Camp Nou next season.
With Busquets and Jordi Alba set to leave Barcelona at the end of the season, the club will be needing a new leader and president Joan Laporta wants Messi to fill the role.
Messi was Barcelona’s captain before leaving for PSG in 2021, with Busquets taking over the role following his departure.
Messi drops condition for Barcelona return
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has requested Barcelona sign his fellow Argentina teammates Angel Di Maria and Leandro Paredes ahead of his potential return, Sportskeeda reports.
Di Maria and Parades both played alongside Messi at Paris Saint-Germain last season before joining Juventus this season from the Ligue 1 giants at the start of the 2022/23 campaign.
With Juventus more likely to miss UEFA Champions League qualification next season, Messi now wants Barcelona to sign both Argentina stars as one of the conditions before re-signing for the Catalan giants.
