Borussia Dortmund have a date with destiny this weekend as the Black and Yellow could become Bundesliga champions for the first time in eleven years.

Dortmund head into the final matchday of the season two points clear of defending champions Bayern Munich, and a win against Mainz will automatically end their Bundesliga drought.

According to BBC, Bayern head to Cologne needing a win, coupled with a draw or defeat for Dortmund, to hand them an 11th successive German top-flight title.

Dortmund sports director Sebastian Kehl who last captained the team to the Bundesliga title has stated that the team needs to perform really well one more time to realize their dream.

Here, Sports Brief lists the teams that have failed to win the Bundesliga title despite leading the table heading into the final matchday.

Bundesliga title bottlers on final day

Bayern Munich, Werder Bremen, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen have all seen their chances of winning the Bundesliga title blow up in their faces on the final day of the season.

1. Bayern Munich in 70/71

Borussia Monchengladbach successfully defended their title with Bayern Munich ending up in second place despite starting the final matchday top of the league.

The Bavarians lost the league title by two points after finishing the season with 48 points from 34 matches while eventual winners Monchengladbach garnered 50 points.

2. Werder Bremen in 85/86

Werder Bremen agonizingly lost the Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich on goal difference after both teams finished the season on 49 points apiece.

Bremen who started the final matchday top of the Bundesliga, lost 2-1 to Stuttgart while Bayern thrashed Borussia Mönchengladbach 6-0 to win their eighth league title.

3. Eintracht Frankfurt in 91/92

Eintracht Frankfurt did not only fail to win the Bundesliga in 1992 despite topping the league table on the final day but ended up finishing third.

Frankfurt finished behind VfB Stuttgart and Borussia Dortmund after they lost their final match 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen.

4. Werder Bremen in 94/95

Werder Bremen lost out again on the Bundesliga title for the second time on the final matchday to Borussia Dortmund despite leading the table.

5. Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 99/00

Bayer Leverkusen tasted their own heartbreak in the year 2000 after the lost the Bundesliga title to Bayern Munich on the final day of the season.

Leverkusen missed winning the league by goal difference after having an inferior goal difference to Bayern despite both teams finishing on 73 points apiece.

Bayern Munich’s 10 Year Bundesliga Dominance

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Borussia Dortmund could have their best season in just over a decade, with the club on the verge of becoming Bundesliga champions for the first time in over 10 years.

Bayern Munich’s slip-up against RB Leipzig has presented Edin Terzic’s team with their best opportunity to be crowned German league champions for the first time since 2012.

The last time another team in Germany won the Bundesliga was in 2011/2012, when current Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp, led Dortmund to the title.
