  • The official reasons for Ivan Toney's lengthy ban have been revealed by the Football Association
  • The Brentford striker admitted to breaching the FA's betting rules between 2017 and 2021
  • Toney, through his Twitter account, has promised to respond in due time

The Football Association (FA) has officially released its written reasons for the lengthy ban it handed Brentford striker, Ivan Toney last week.

The FA has classified Toney as a betting addict after it emerged that he bet on his own team to lose 13 times, contrary to FA betting rules.

Toney was found guilty of 232 breaches of betting rules between February 2017 and January 2021, and was subsequently handed an eight-month ban and a 50,000 euro fine. The ban will see him return to competitive football in January, but he can resume training in September, as reported by Sky Sports.

Toney's betting charges

The FA's document shows that the England international admitted to his charges. Had he not admitted, he would have been handed a 15-month ban to show the 'seriousness of the case'.

The document further shows that Toney bet on his team to lose 13 times between August 22, 2017 and March 3, 2018, but he did not play in any of the matches. 126 bets were also in a league in which Toney's team was participating or eligible to participate.

Of these 126 bets, 29 were placed involving clubs Toney was registered with at that time. He was a Newcastle Unite player on loan at Scunthorpe and Wigan.

And in 16 instances of the 29, Toney bet on his team to win 15 different matches. The striker played 11 of these games and was an unused substitute in the others.

In a quick rejoinder, the 27-year-old has taken to his Twitter account, promising to give a full account of his version soon, with 'no filter'.

Toney's season for Brentford

Sports Brief earlier reported that an independent regulatory commission imposed the sanctions on Toney, who will not be allowed to train with his teammates until September 17.

Toney, capped once by England against Ukraine in March, has scored 21 goals in 35 appearances for Brentford this season.

His absence will be a huge blow for the team, after his goals played a key role in their rise to ninth place in the Premier League, as they head into the last two games of the season.
