The biggest World Cup snubs: A list of footballers left out of their countries’ World Cup squad
Football10 Funniest Moments of the Season; From Ronaldo’s Arm Lock to Salah Embarrassing Martinez
- Top-flight leagues across the world provided hilarious moments all season
- Many European leagues will come to a close in the next two weeks before the Champions League final
- We reflect on some of the moments that made fans have a hearty laugh in a season there was also the World Cup
Phew! That was a long season. And it's not over yet, with the matter of who goes down and cup finals yet to be determined.
Armed with Erling Haaland, Manchester City successfully retained their title with the fledgling Arsenal squad of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard agonizingly having to settle for second place.
The usual rhetoric of player of the season, signing of the season, you name it, is set to follow. But let's get unconventional for a moment here; which moment left you in tears this season?
Sports Brief takes a look at the moments that lit up various leagues throughout the season. The World Cup also offered some enthralling spectacles and it's only fair we include moments from Qatar 2022.
1. Richarlison's hero to zero moment
You've got to feel for the Brazilian striker. He has been quite unfortunate in his first season in North London and on April 30, he thought that his first goal for his new club would seal a dramatic point from 3-0 down against Liverpool.
He even did the famous pigeon celebration dance at Anfield, only for his close friend, Lucas Moura, to gift Diogo Jota the winner a few seconds later.
Never count your chickens, or pigeons before they hatch.
2. Jurgen Klopp vs Tottenham
Sticking with the same game, Klopp provided an all-timer as he watched his side go 3-0 up before being pegged back to 3-3 before they eventually won it right at the death.
Guardiola congratulates Rudiger but issues stern Haaland warning ahead of second leg
FootballThe German was put through a rollercoaster of emotions and the manager cam provided a very hilarious viewing. The pick of the bunch is when he pulled his hamstring while celebrating.
He also couldn't seem to understand why Thiago Alcantara was passing instructions to Darwin Nunez.
Hey, I am the coach here.
3. Cristiano Ronaldo's arm lock
Every time you replay the incident, it is hard to see what Ronaldo was trying to pull off. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner viciously hang on Gustavo Cuellar, head-locking the Al-Hilal player.
The Portuguese icon was rightfully booked by Premier League referee Michael Oliver who was against Ronaldo, portraying his WWE skills.
Consider yourself warned Roman Reigns.
4. Luke O'Nien
It's quite a shame that we won't be seeing Luke O'Nien's Sunderland in the Premier League next season, but boy, didn't he make the championship worth watching this season!
Gundogan masterclass takes Man City closer to title at Everton's expense
FootballIt started with him piggy-backing Bristol City's Alex Scott to prevent him from launching a counter-attack. A few days later, he followed it up by kissing Norwich's Jacob Sorensen in the middle of an altercation, as previously reported by Sports Brief.
Anything to stop an opponent, huh?
5. Osman Bukari's celebration vs Portugal
Let's head to Qatar. We understand that Bukari was chuffed to score his first World Cup goal against Ronaldo's team.
But celebrating passionately when you are trailing 3-2 in the 89th minute is very unserious behaviour if you ask me. And he even hit the Siuuu celebration. You should have seen Ronaldo's reaction.
Who is this guy?
6. Casemiro vs De Gea
Very few players have the CV Casemiro has. He has been a revelation to Manchester United this season, save for his red cards.
He has seen everything and won almost everything. He was, therefore, agitated when De Gea appeared to offer no resistance whatsoever in the FA Cup semifinal penalty shootout against Brighton.
Jordan Pickford escapes punishment after punching Erling Haaland in the head
FootballThe Brazilian gestured rather animatedly to his goalkeeper to move around to offset the Brighton players.
Come on, Dave, do something.
7. Mohamed Salah skill on Lisandro Martinez
For starters, the final result of this game in itself was hilarious. Unless, of course, you are a United fan. 7-0? Against your biggest rivals? In a season you are supposedly struggling?
Salah then took it a notch higher by turning Martinez inside out to set up Liverpool's third goal of the rout. It was the first time that the Argentine put a foot wrong since all the hullabaloo about his height but against Salah, he met his match.
Respect your elders, pal.
8. Oleksandr Zinchenko huddle
How Arsenal's season unravelled as they threw away an eight-point lead remains a mystery. Moreso against 'modest' opposition like Southampton and West Ham.
Against bottom-placed Southampton at the Emirates, Mikel Arteta's side went 2-0 down inside 14 minutes thanks to errors from Aaron Ramsdale and Zinchenko himself. Guess who called his teammates for an in-game meeting?
Barcelona earn La Liga title with Espanyol rout
FootballThe antic by the Ukrainian did not go down well, with fans slamming him for doing it for the cameras.
Pipe down, mate.
9. Haaland vs Ben Godfrey
The Norwegian phenomenon makes it to almost every list this season, doesn't he? No one has quite managed to stop him this season, with many defenders resorting to bullying him.
Only that you can't bully a 6'4' giant.
Against Everton last year, he had running battles with Ben Godfrey, with the defender keen on stopping him at whatever cost. Haaland responded by mocking him. He celebrated after he won a foul and his footage mimicking Godfrey went viral.
You want to be petty? Okay, let's be petty.
10. Darwin Nunez
Scoring nine goals in the Premier League is not a bad return. Just ask any Chelsea striker in recent times. But when you are being compared to Haaland, it becomes difficult to cope.
Lukaku back to best as Inter eye Champions League final
FootballNunez has had a topsy-turvy season in Liverpool, but he has compensated adequately by providing hilarious moments.
Like when he mocked Conor Coady after his goal was disallowed in the Merseyside derby. The striker had the audacity to make the VAR symbol to Coady.
Want to check for yourself mate?
Or when he reminded the Everton players what the scoreline was when an altercation broke out after he had been substituted. He walked all the way from the bench to the scene of the incident to rub it in.
Who said I have to be a striker alone? I can do part-time comedy as well.
Other mentions
We definitely cannot exhaust all the incidents that happened this season. From Reece James barging into referee Stuart Atwell to Ivan Perisic leaving Virgil Van Dijk for dead. Or how Antony hilariously promised to win the game for Casemiro.
Feel free to add yours, but one thing is clear; football might be a very emotional game, but when you loosen up, you will see its hilarious side.
