Former Germany international Lothar Matthaus has disclosed that he was approached by the Ghana Football Association to be the coach of the Black Stars over a decade ago.
Before the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the FA were in search of a coach who would lead the national team to their first-ever World Cup.
Matthaus was one of the managers listed for the role before the Association settled on Serbian trainer Ratomir Djukovic.
Djukovic ended up leading Ghana to her first-ever Mundial, as the Black Stars won the hearts of many by reaching the last 16.
"Ghana approached me for the coaching role around 2005 and 2006,” the Germany legend told the media, as quoted by Pulse.
“We were in touch, but for some reason, it did not work out in the final stages of discussions. Perhaps there were many candidates on their list, and maybe I was one of them."
Matthaus has been in Ghana since Monday, where he was announced a part owner of Premier League side Accra Lions FC, as reported by spiegel.de.
He is expected to play a key role in the development of the Ghanaian topflight side.

Lothar Matthaus slams Bayern
World Cup winner and former Player of the Year, Lothar Matthaus has blamed Bayern Munich's recent woes on the club's poor decisions.
Earlier this year, the German giants fired Julian Nagelsmann and replaced him with ex-Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel.
The decision seems to have backfired as Bayern could end the season without silverware, having been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League and the DFB-Pokal.
