  • The Premier League is one of the most lucrative in European football
  • Chelsea spent the highest transfer fees in the last two transfer windows- more than £600m
  • The Blues also top other Premier League clubs by dishing out astounding wages

Chelsea have been in the headlines regarding their financial strength in the past year. A change of ownership does not seem to have affected their spending.

A Todd Boehly-led consortium took over from Roman Abramovich after the Russian oligarch was forced to sell the club due to sanctions from the UK government.

Aside from being the highest spenders, Chelsea have also become the club with the highest wage bill in the English top flight.

Sports Brief looks at how the traditional top 6 compare in terms of wages this season, as revealed by sports investment fund Alliance, via Mirror UK.

1. Chelsea

According to ESPN, the Blues have splashed over £600m on 16 new players since Boehly took over, which includes British record signing, Enzo Fernandez for £106.8m.

They now have the highest wage bill of £216.6m. This is mainly due to their bloated squad of over 30 first-team stars on high wages, some of which are set to depart this summer.

2. Manchester United

The Red Devils dropped to second on the wage bill table after Cristiano Ronaldo’s huge wages were taken off their payroll. His contract was mutually terminated and he joined Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

United currently have a wage bill of £213.3m, with goalkeeper David De Gea the highest-paid player with a salary of £375,000 per week.

3. Manchester City

The champions are third on the wages log, with a yearly salary output of £186.16m. This is despite the fact that they have multiple players with high wage bills, including Kevin De Bruyne, who is on £400,000 per week.

According to The Times, City have begun a legal battle against the 115 Financial Fair Play breaches levied against them by the league earlier this year.

4. Liverpool

The Reds are fourth, with an annual wage bill of £164.5m. This could see a reduction with a planned summer clearout, with five confirmed departures. Mohamed Salah is their highest-paid player, with a salary of £350,000 per week.

5. Arsenal

The league runners-up have the fifth-highest wage bill, which stands at £110.3m per season. Bukayo Saka, who signed a new contract yesterday, is now the highest-paid player with a mammoth £300,000 per-week wage.

6. Tottenham

The third London club on the list and the last member of the traditional Big 6, Tottenham have a wage bill of £110.2m, slightly below their North London rivals, Arsenal.

PL positional highest-paid players

Sports Brief analysed the Premier League’s highest-paid player in each position, forming a strong starting 11 that would likely easily beat the rest.

The team boasts some of the best stars in the Premier League, including David De Gea, Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah, and Chelsea academy star Reece James.
