Former World Player of the Year and Germany's World Cup winner, Lothar Matthaus has become a part owner of Ghana Premier League side Accra Lions.
The former Germany international joins Ghanaian footballer, Frank Acheampong and club chairman, Oliver Koenig as owners of the club.
In a grand press conference in Accra on Tuesday, Matthaus explained his decision to invest in the club and his vision of helping players from Ghana.
"Ghana has always had huge potential for talent, you can see that in the national team,” he said at the press conference.
“We want to bring young players to Europe. In a serious way and already well-trained. That’s why we’re also investing in the training ground here.”
Matthaus was in Accra on Saturday to watch the team as they defeated two-time champions Aduana Stars 3-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
"The Accra Lions players are so professional. They’re all very talented from what I saw in training. The facilities were good and I want to ensure we improve it more. Beating Aduana Stars after a rough patch in form is the kind of mentality I like. That’s why I’m here," he added.
Mr Koenig, co-owner of the club, also disclosed that West Africa's talent pool needs the right support to flourish.
“West Africa has the biggest talent pool in the world. If you love football and want the best talent, then West Africa is the place. The hope is that when we provide the best infrastructure, we will see world class players," he said.

Gyan explains GPL return
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that legendary Ghanaian footballer, Asamoah Gyan has disclosed that his decision to play in the domestic topflight league was influenced by his quest to make an impact in his home country.
Injuries plagued Gyan's brief spell at Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities, and he has not played competitively since leaving the club in 2021.
Although he is yet to officially hang up his boots, Gyan is hoping to have a last dance with a club in the league before calling it quits.
