- Peter Shalulile has shared the 2022/23 Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award with Khanyisa Mayo
- Sundowns' Shalulile has scored more than 20 goals for the past three seasons with the Brazilians
- Only SuperSport's Bradley Grobler has beaten Shalulile to the top scorer title in the past four terms
Peter Shalulile has officially won his third Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award.
The Namibian striker finished the 2022/23 season with 12 goals, tying with Cape Town City’s Khanyisa Mayo.
Both strikers were tied on 12 goals heading into the final fixtures, with four other players also in range of taking the award.
Shalulile was rested for Sundowns’ last game of the season against Maritzburg United, while Mayo failed to score during City’s win over Kaizer Chiefs.
As noted by iDiski Times, it’s the third time the Namibian marksman has scooped the award and the second time he’s shared it.
In 2018/2019, he scored 16 goals for Highlands Park and shared it with Gabadinho Mhango. In the 2021/22 season, he won the title outright with 23 goals before winning it again this season.
As noted by SuperSport.com, Bradley Grobler is the only striker to beat Shalulile to the title in the past few years.
The SuperSport United striker scored 16 goals that season, while the Sundowns star bagged 15. If Grobler hadn’t dethroned the Mamelodi Sundowns star, Shalulile would have won four Golden Boot awards in a row.
Shalulile’s consistency for Sundowns
As noted by Transfermarkt, Shalulile has scored over 20 goals in the past three seasons for the Brazilians.
With the Namibian in fine form in front of goal, Sundowns will be hoping that they will finally win the CAF Champions League next season.
Sundowns unwilling to sell Shalulile
Sports Brief previously reported that Mamelodi Sundowns want to retain Shalulile in their ranks heading into the next season.
