  • The Argentine could join an elite list including Barcelona legend Dani Alves

Paris Saint-Germain superstar, Lionel Messi has the chance to become the world's most decorated footballer alongside Barcelona legend, Dani Alves.

The Parisians are on course to become the French champions again this season. They have 84 points on the board from 36 games and lead the second-placed RC Lens by six points.

According to TransferMarkt, Messi has won 41 major trophies for his clubs and country, and can match Alves' tally of 42 by winning the Ligue 1 this season.

Among the most notable achievements from the Argentine veteran's career are claiming the FIFA World Cup, four UEFA Champions League titles, 10 La Liga titles, and one Copa America.

On the domestic front, in Neymar's absence due to injury, Messi and Kylian Mbappe have carried PSG's attack during the latter part of the season.

The 35-year-old in particular has scored 20 goals and provided 20 assists in 39 matches across competitions this season.

Messi won the Ligue 1 during his first season in France. He looks set to do so again in what could be his last season in the country.

PSG superstar Marquinhos defends Messi

Messi has become the subject of the PSG fans' wrath in recent times, often being booed by the Parisian club's supporters.

After the Argentine returned to action following his suspension due to the 'unauthorised' Saudi Arabia trip, he was once again jeered.

Despite mounting criticism from French pundits, who have often criticised the Argentine for his poor performances, Marquinhos has come to Messi's defence.

As reported by Goal, the central defender recently told L'Equipe:

"I always respect protests when they are peaceful, at the times and places where it is necessary. Above all, I ask the supporters not to target one player or another. It must always be collective. A player doesn't walk on his own, he's not going to do anything on his own."

Messi's time at the club could come to an end in the summer. He is currently in the final months of his current deal and Fabrizio Romano has reported the Argentine is looking to depart Paris.

Messi urged to snub Barcelona

Following the talks of the veteran's likely departure from the French Capital, Sports Brief reported that Argentine defender, German Pazella urged Messi to snub a return to Camp Nou in favour of a move to Real Betis.

The La Albiceleste captain's future has been up in the air recently after it emerged the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner would probably be leaving Paris Saint-Germain after two mixed seasons with the Ligue 1 giants.
