Ghanaian forward Kevin-Prince Boateng was the last to leave the field after boyhood club Hertha Berlin suffered relegation in his penultimate game for the team.
The 36-year-old will retire at the end of the Bundesliga season but his ambitions of helping Hertha stay in the league crushed after a 1-1 home draw against Bochum.
After the game, Boateng broke into tears and stayed hours as he reflected on what has become a very tough end to a long career.
"We had a tiny chance, I can't blame the team today. The relegation didn't happen today... I can't explain it. It is just sad. But I love this club," he told reported, as quoted by DW.

FootballBoateng returned to Hertha Berlin in 2021 after a career that has seen him play for several clubs including Barcelona and AC Milan.
Last season, with relegation stirring at Hertha, the then 35-year-old inspired them in the play-offs as they confirmed their stay for another season.
He was rewarded with a year extension at the end of the campaign. He will retire after Hertha's final game against Wolfsburg.
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Kevin-Prince Boateng has revisited his days with Barcelona where he played alongside Lionel Messi.
The former Black Stars midfielder spent the 2018/19 season on loan with the Catalan giants from Italian outfit, Sassuolo.
Boateng shocked the footballing world after it was announced he was joining the La Liga giants for the second half of the campaign, having excelled in Serie A.

The German-born Ghanaian enjoyed a good time with the four-time African champions and was one of the stars of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
However, four years later, Boateng would be banished from camp alongside Sulley Muntari over misconduct.
