  • Riyad Mahrez has made history after Manchester City won the 2022/23 EPL title
  • The Algerian star is now the African with the most EPL titles
  • Mahrez has been an integral member of City's incredible campaign this season

Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez has become the African player with the most English Premier League titles after Manchester City were declared champions on Saturday, May 20, 2023.

The Citizens were crowned champions without even kicking the ball after Arsenal lost to Nottingham Forest at the City Grounds.

City's four points advantage over Arsenal with just a game remaining for the Gunners means the London club are mathematically out of the race.

This means Mahrez has now won the Premier League five times, the most by an African player, beating the likes of Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure to the top spot, according to otlsport.

Mahrez first won the league title with Leicester City in 2016, where he starred alongside Jamie Vardy in an outstanding campaign.

The former African Player of the Year has won the league four times with Manchester City.

The player closest to Mahrez in terms of EPL achievement is Drogba, who won the league four times with Chelsea with Toure winning it three times with City.

Kolo Toure, Nwankwo Kanu, John Obi Mikel, Michael Essien and Geremi Njitap have all won the league two times.

Mahrez's nets hat-trick in FA Cup

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Riyad Mahrez fired Manchester City into the FA Cup final as the Algerian's hat-trick sealed a 3-0 win against Sheffield United at Wembley on Saturday.

Mahrez's superb display dispatched the Championship underdogs, ensuring City ended their run of three successive FA Cup semi-final defeats.

The 32-year-old shattered United's resistence with a penalty late in the first half and completed his treble with two clinical finishes after the interval.

Mahrez reacts to Villa mistake

Riyad Mahrez made light of his missed chance during a Premier League game against Aston Villa on February 12.

The Algerian missed a sitter that would have been Manchester City's fourth goal, after he skied his effort over the bar in an uncharacteristic fashion.

Pep Guardiola's side made amends after falling to a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, by steamrolling Villa in the first half at the Etihad Stadium.
