Marumo Gallants’ week has gone from bad to worse.
The South African side were first dumped out of the CAF Confederations Cup and have now been relegated from the DStv Premiership. Gallants were beaten by Young Africans over two legs in the semi-final of the continental competition.
Going into the final weekend of fixtures in the league, however, Gallants were one of three teams at the bottom of the table on 29 points. They stood the best chance of avoiding relegation as they had a superior goal difference over Maritzburg United and Chippa United.
Sadly for Bahlabane Ba Ntwa, they were defeated by Swallows on the final day, which saw them finish bottom of the table, IOL reported.
Lindokuhle Mtshali grabbed a brace to take the Dube Birds into the top eight of the league.
Hope for Maritzburg United
KwaZulu-Natal’s Maritzburg United will have to fight for survival as they finished in the relegation/promotion playoff spot. A hard-earned draw against Mamelodi Sundowns in their final fixture took them out of the bottom place on the table.
They will now face Cape Town Spurs and Casric Stars in the relegation/promotion playoffs for a chance to remain in the top flight of South African football, News24 reported.
Polokwane City will also play in the premiership next season after they finished as champions of the National First Division. Polokwane won the title on the season's final day thanks to their superior goal difference.
