FootballOrlando Pirates and SuperSport United Battle for Final CAF Champions League Spot
- Orlando Pirates take on AmaZulu in the final game of the season as they chase a second-place finish
- SuperSport United will have to beat Sekhukhune United and hope Pirates drop points against Usuthu
- Pirates and SuperSport are both fighting for the final CAF Champions League spot next season
The race for the second spot in the DStv Premiership will go down to the last game of the season.
Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United are tied on points and are separated by a goal difference of only two as the season draws to an end.
With the second and third place deciding who plays in the CAF Champions League and who goes to the CAF Confederations Cup, the stakes are high.
Sports Brief looks at the final fixtures for both sides and who has the better chance of finishing behind Mamelodi Sundowns.
Orlando Pirates:
The Buccaneers currently occupy second spot on the log with 51 points, having finished last season in sixth with 44 points. When Jose Riveiro took charge at the club, many didn’t expect much, but as IOL noted, Pirates have punched above their weight.
The Sowetan giants won the MTN8 title, are in the final of the Nedbank Cup, and could still wrap up a runner-up spot in the league if they beat AmaZulu.
The KwaZulu-Natal side aren’t going to do Pirates any favours, though.
As reported by SuperSport.com, AmaZulu want to end a season on a high note and aren’t too concerned about Pirates and Matsatsantsa’s battle for second.
"We are going to this game with the aim of ending the season with a win and continuing to build for next season. Pirates have their goals, SuperSport too. We are motivated to win the game and entertain our fans," interim coach Ayanda Dlamini said.

FootballSuperSport United:
Matsatsantsa have also seen vast improvement this season under a new coach. The Gauteng-based side brought back Gavin Hunt, and his appointment has worked wonders.
SuperSport finished last season in eight, on 40 points, but find themselves in third this time. With a final game against Sekhukhune United, Matsatsantsa can grab second and the final CAF Champions League spot, depending on Pirates’ result.
Hunt will be disappointed if his team can’t secure the CAF Champions League place, Goal noted.
"Anything can happen. I can’t really say what I want to say, for me personally, it would be a huge disappointment not to get CAF Champions League football," Hunt said.
SuperSport will consider themselves favourites to beat Sekhukhune, but their opponents are also in the Nedbank Cup final this season and can’t be considered pushovers.
Orlando Pirates cement second place
Orlando Pirates claimed a fifth straight DStv Premiership win and put themselves in a prime position to finish second on the log after they defeated Cape Town City, Sports Brief earlier reported.
