Sheffield Wednesday produced a performance for the record books after edging past Peterborough United to reach the League One playoff's final.

Peterborough looked on course for the final after a 4-0 win in the first leg, but the determination of Wednesday overpowered their initial loss.

Michael Smith and Lee Gregory scored in the first half to instill hope in the fixture. Reece James scored in the 71st minute before Liam Palmer sent the stadium into rapture with a dying-minute goal to make it 4-4 on aggregate.

According to SportBible, further drama ensued in the extra time when Sheffield scored an own goal to put their opponents ahead, before Calum Paterson drew level again eight minutes from the end to take the match to penalties which they won 5-3.

Sheffield makes playoffs history

The Owls have made some history this season - they are the first club to hit 96 points and not gain automatic promotion to League One.

According to BBC Sports, their dramatic comeback is also historic, as no team ever came back from more than a two-goal deficit in the history of EFL playoffs.

They will face the winner of the second semi-final between Bolton Wanderers and Barnsley later tonight. The game ended 1-1 in the first leg.

Sheffield Wednesday are one of the oldest football clubs in the world and the second oldest in English football, having been founded in 1867 as an offshoot of the Wednesday Cricket Club.

Wrexham’s match of the season

Sports Brief reported that Wrexham played match of the season against rival Notts County to put a step forward in their eventual promotion to the Football League.

The two sides battled for one automatic promotion slot, and a dramatic 3-2 win, including a last-minute penalty save, helped Wrexham overcome their rivals.

It was the Red Dragons’ first appearance in the EFL since they were relegated to the National League 15 years ago.
