  • The Premier League has unveiled a six-man shortlist for the Manager of the Season award
  • However, there was no place for Erik ten Hag despite having an otherwise successful debut season in the EPL
  • Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta are the first favourites to win the honour after an incredible Premier League title run

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag and his Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp were among the notable absentees as the Premier League revealed the Manager of the Season nominees.

Ten Hag has had a bright start to life in his debut season in the EPL, helping United win their first trophy since 2017, back in February when they lifted the Carabao Cup.

Additionally, the Red Devils are on course to secure a Champions League spot and boast one of the best home records in the Premier League this season.

However, that was not enough to earn Ten Hag a slot in the six-man shortlist for the prestigious Manager of the Season award.

The nominees were announced on Thursday afternoon, May 18, with Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola among the standout names on the shortlist.

According to Talksport, the two managers have enjoyed an incredible season in the English top flight, with Guardiola on the cusp of leading Manchester City to his fifth Premier League triumph.

On his part, Arteta has helped Arsenal challenge for the domestic crown.

While the Gunners have hit a somewhat rough patch in recent weeks, they can still mathematically beat City to the Premier League title.

This would be the first time the north Londoners are tasting Premier League glory in close to two decades.

Which managers have been nominated?

Arteta and Guardiola will be facing stiff competition from four other managers for the top honour.

The Mirror reports Newcastle United's Eddie Howe, Unai Emery of Aston Villa, Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi and Fulham boss Marco Silva have all been nominated.

Howe has helped steer Newcastle to a Champions League spot, while Emery has been a revelation at Villa Park since he replaced Steven Gerrard.

A similar story has been witnessed at Amex Stadium, where De Zerbi has taken the Seagulls to greater heights since he succeeded Graham Potter last September.

Conte aims dig at Arteta

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur head coach, Antonio Conte has dealt a low-key jab at Mikel Arteta's Arsenal following their latest loss to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Arsenal were beaten 3-0 by a meticulous Roberto De Zerbi side on May 14 at the Emirates Stadium.

The result leaves Manchester City needing only one win from their remaining three games to successfully defend their title for the third time.
