  • Peter Shalulile was the leading scorer in the DStv Premiership last season and leads the way once again
  • Cape Town City's Khanyisa Mayo is level with Shalulile and needs just one goal against Kaizer Chiefs
  • Bradley Grobler, Monnapule Saleng, Etiosa Godspower Ighodaro, and Ranga Chivaviro are all on 10 goals

Mamelodi Sundowns may have been crowned DStv Premiership champions already, but individual honours are still up for grabs.

While Sundowns won the league in April already, the race for the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award could be settled on the season's final day.

Last season’s winner, Peter Shalulile, is looking to defend his crown but faces stiff competition from the chasing pack.

Transfermarkt notes the Sundowns star leads the way with 12 goals, but shares that spot with another player.

Sports Brief looks at five players who could dethrone Shahulile as this year’s top scorer in the league.

Khanyisa Mayo

The Cape Town City forward has 12 goals for the season and is currently tied with Shalulile for top honours.

He is guaranteed to share the trophy with the Namibian marksman, but can win it himself by netting a single goal during his side’s final game.

City take on Kaizer Chiefs in their last game and will secure fourth place in the standings with a win.

Monnapule Saleng

The Orlando Pirates forward is enjoying an excellent season for the Buccaneers, having already notched up 10 goals this season in the league.

Saleng was signed by Pirates at the start of the 2021/22 season but was loaned out to Swallows.

He’s proven why the Soweto giants signed him by often finding the back of the net for his new club, and must score a hat-trick against Amazulu on the final day to leapfrog Shalulile.

Bradley Grobler

A former winner of the top scorer trophy, Grobler is proving just how lethal a striker he can be.

The SuperSport United attacker also has 10 goals and has found his form again after a lengthy injury layoff.

SuperSport are battling Pirates for second place in the standings and will need Grobler to fire against Sekhukhune United to help achieve that - he also needs to score three goals to claim the top spot.

Etiosa Godspower Ighodaro

Chippa United’s Ighodaro is one of four players with 10 goals, all looking to win the coveted award.

The Nigerian striker has been leading the charge for The Chilli Boys as they look to avoid relegation.

As noted by iDiski Times, the Nigerian joined the side on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns, with Ighodaro likely proving vital in Chippa's final game against Golden Arrows.

Ranga Chivaviro

Marumo Gallants are also facing the prospect of being relegated on the final day of the season and will be looking to Ranga Chivaviro to fire them to safety.

Gallants play a Swallows side looking for a top-eight finish, so it won’t be easy, although their forward is also on 10 goals in the league this season and has an outside chance of winning the Golden Boot award.

Chivaviro has not only impressed in the league but also the CAF Confederations Cup this season.

Sundowns unwilling to sell Shalulile

Sports Brief previously reported that Mamelodi Sundowns want to retain Shalulile in their ranks heading into the next season.

The Namibian striker has been in red-hot form for the DStv Premiership champions and has thus caught the eye of many sides.

Shalulile has maintained he would not play for any side other than Sundowns in South Africa but would consider a European club.
