  • They are of the view that the Portuguese has not impressed since he took over a year ago
  • There are reports that the NFF chiefs have shortlisted names of five coaches

Key Nigerian sports stakeholders have urged the Nigerian Football Federation chiefs not to renew the contract of Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro after the expiration of his one-year deal.

The Portuguese has been in charge of the Super Eagles since May 2022 replacing Austin Eguavoen who failed to qualify Nigeria for the World Cup losing the play-offs against Ghana.

Under Jose Peseiro, the Super Eagles have played eight games winning three and lost five including an embarrassing home loss against Guinea-Bissau

Peseiro's contract has expired on Monday, May 15, but the NFF are yet to make their decision.

According to the report on Punch, some stakeholders have warned the NFF chiefs as they want Peseiro to leave.

Femi Adetula wants Peseiro out

“What has he done to warrant the extension but then again it is what it is. He should not continue as coach of the Eagles. He should just go away.''

Temisan Okomi slams Peseiro

“He is clueless and not desirable of the Eagles. Some of my Portuguese friends who are sports journalists do mock me and Nigeria when we discuss why we had to settle for a coach of his calibre.”

According to the report by Owngoal, the NFF chiefs have shortlisted names of five coaches.

NFF board may not retain Peseiro

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Jose Peseiro's one-year contract as the Super Eagles coach expired on Monday, May 15, with the Nigerian Football Federation chiefs reportedly not ready not to allow the Portuguese to continue as gaffer.

The former Venezuela coach was hired by the former NFF board, under Amaju Pinnick, after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, losing the playoffs against Ghana.

Erstwhile Nigerian international, Austine Eguavoen was in charge of the Nigerian national team at that time.

But since Peseiro took over from Eguavoen, the Portuguese has only won three out of eight games with the other five ending in losses.
