FootballKaizer Chiefs Release Statement on How Police Injured Arthur Zwane, Deny Fans’ Attack
- Arthur Zwane was the center of fan violence after Kaizer Chiefs lost to SuperSport over the weekend
- Amakhosi have lost three of their last four matches, and can no longer qualify for continental football for next season
- The tactician was injured in the process, but a club official has disclosed that the injury came from a police shield
South African club, Kaizer Chiefs have denied allegations that angry fans of the club were responsible for Arthur Zwane’s injury.
Irate supporters of Amakhosi pelted objects at the manager following their 1-0 loss to SuperSport United over the weekend.
It was their third loss in four matches, and they now have no chance of taking part in continental football next season.
'It was not the fans'
Police officers had to escort Zwane down the tunnel of the Royal Bafokeng Stadium as fans continued to throw objects at him, GOAL reports.
He was injured in the process, but the club’s communications manager, Vina Maphosa, stated that a police shield injured the coach.
Maphosa told Radio2000, as per Soccer Laduma:
“I can confirm that the coach was injured after the game. He was hurt in the eye and received medical attention.
“He wasn’t hit by the objects thrown by the fans, but by the shield of the police who were trying to protect him. The coach is recovering well and should be on the bench against [Cape Town] City in our last game.
“Even though he wasn’t hit by the objects, we have been able to identify three plain-clothed supporters who threw the objects.
“We want to condemn the act of violence at the stadium, and we’d like to also pass a strong message to our supporters or whoever used the opportunity to exhibit elements of violence at the stadium, as you have seen at our home matches.”
