  • The one-year contract signed by Jose Peseiro as Super Eagles coach has now expired
  • The NFF are reportedly not yet ready to extend the contract of the Portuguese gaffer
  • There is also speculation the NFF is planning to find another coach to help cut costs

Jose Peseiro's one-year contract as the Super Eagles coach expired on Monday, May 15, with the Nigerian Football Federation chiefs reportedly not ready not to allow the Portuguese to continue as gaffer.

The former Venezuela coach was hired by the former NFF board, under Amaju Pinnick, after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, losing the playoffs against Ghana.

Erstwhile Nigerian international, Austine Eguavoen was in charge of the Nigerian national team at that time.

But since Peseiro took over from Eguavoen, the Portuguese has only won three out of eight games with the other five ending in losses.

It was also under his guidance that the Super Eagles recorded their worst run in 42 years.

According to the reports by Punch and Naija News, the new NFF board, under Ibrahim Gusau, are not happy with the poor results Nigeria have recorded under Peseiro.

A source in the NFF told Punch there had not been any discussion with the Portuguese over a new contract.

NFF source discusses Peseiro's contract

"As I speak with you, there is no discussion between the NFF and Peseiro over his contract renewal. The board hasn’t discussed it yet."

However, it is believed the NFF could be looking at Salisu Yusuf as a replacement coach, which would also help the football body cut down on costs.

Gara Gombe wants Peseiro sacked

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how experienced Nigerian soccer administrator, Gara Gombe stated the Nigerian Football Federation chiefs made a mistake in hiring Peseiro as head coach.

The Portuguese became the head coach of the three-time African champions following the Super Eagles' failure to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, losing in the play-offs against Ghana.

A former Venezuela national coach, Peseiro was appointed by ex-NFF boss, Pinnick, who claimed to have been satisfied with the records of the Portuguese but things have not gone well.
