Bayern Munich are reportedly 'unlikely' to exercise their option to make marquee defender Joao Cancelo's loan move from Manchester City permanent in the summer transfer window.

The Portuguese ace, who left the Etihad in January to sign for the Bundesliga outfit on a six-month loan deal is unlikely to make the permanent switch to Germany, with Bayern not expected to trigger their £62m clause to officially sign Cancelo.

According to Calciomercato, the report adds that Chelsea and Real Madrid are the two most likely options for the 28-year-old if he does leave City this summer, while he could also remain part of Pep Guardiola's squad.

The defender made a promising start to his Bayern career grabbing two assists in his first two games, but he has since fallen down the pecking order.

It is also claimed that former coach, Julian Nagelsmann, saw Cancelo as a 'typical' full-back and as such not as suited to the current team, which reportedly left Cancelo, who left City in search of more regular first-team football, 'frustrated' with his situation.

Since signing for the Citizens from Juventus in 2019, the right-back has won two Premier League titles and two EFL Cups.

At the time of his departure, manager Pep Guardiola said:

'He left because he always wants to play all the games.'
'I wish him to do it in Germany for the next four months and then I don't know what will happen next season.'

His willingness to let the Portuguese go after Rico Lewis' emergence has now seemingly been vindicated.

The 41-caps international recorded assists against Mainz in the cup on his debut in the Bundesliga and in the following match, but after Bayern lost against Borussia Monchengladbach, Cancelo was demoted to the bench.

He was limited to a substitute role until the appointment of new coach Thomas Tuchel. Though his time under the German appears like a new lease to life, it hasn’t seemingly translated to the Bayern Munich board changing their stance regarding triggering Cancelo’s release clause.

Arsenal to sign Joao Cancelo

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is reportedly interested in signing Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo according to talksport.

The 28-year-old fullback who worked briefly with Mikel Arteta at Man City appears surplus to requirement at the Etihad. With Cancelo facing an uncertain future at City and Bayern Munich looking all set to not make his signing permanent, a move to the Emirates appears likely for the Portuguese.

Cancelo speaks on dumping City

As reported earlier by Sports Brief, Portugal international, Joao Cancelo cleared the air about the reason behind his sensational switch to Bayern Munich in the just-ended January transfer window.

Cancelo is believed to have reacted angrily after learning he would not be in the starting line-up for Man City's FA Cup tie with Arsenal, per Daily Mail.

This reportedly birthed his decision to leave the Premier League champions.
