Arteta's charges had been topping the standings for the better part of the campaign and even enjoyed an eight-point advantage over reigning champs, Manchester City.
However, a string of disastrous results in the closing stages of the campaign have seen the north Londoners drop out of the race, giving City a significant edge in the battle.

Why Arsenal failed to win the EPL
With Arsenal having little to no hope of being crowned champions this season, Neville has outlined seven reasons why the north Londoners failed to conquer the league this season.
The legendary defender, who had long predicted Arsenal's collapse, took to Twitter to share why the Emirates dwellers stood no chance against City in the title race.
Neville tweeted:
“Arsenal have had a great season but when the going got tough they struggled.
“It seems now the narrative is that it’s City’s strength, injuries and a tough run in is the cause. These are normal factors that need pricing into a title race.

Football“Arsenal have dropped 12 pts in 7 games! Won 9pts from a possible 21.
“All the characteristics of it being too much have appeared. Loss of form, giving up leads, energy and legs going, making unforced errors not seen earlier in the season, young players becoming tense and losing their freedom of expression and others showing too much emotion when calmness is needed.
“I understand why we want to use less emotive language in 2023. However in a high performance environment and at elite level we must still recognise when pressure has taken its toll," he added.
Arsenal stars accused of over-celebration
Earlier, Sports Brief reported former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has accused the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko of over-celebrating in the wake of Arsenal’s collapse in the title race.
Manchester City could be crowned Champions as early as on Saturday, May 20, if the Gunners lose no Nottingham Forest in what would be Pep Guardiola’s fourth league title in five years.
For Arsenal, their 3-0 defeat to Brighton all but ended their title hopes, and Gary Neville believes some Arsenal players got ahead of themselves weeks ago.
