  • Granit Xhaka’s brother was caught in the most bizarre red card of the season
  • Taulant Xhaka, who plays for FC Basel, was shown a red card for a hit on an opposition player
  • The incident was quite odd however, as he had to be called back to be shown a straight red card

Taulant Xhaka lived up to his brother’s reputation after receiving a red card during FC Basel’s clash with Zurich recently.

The fiery clash was rigged with cases of indiscipline and bad fouls, and the referee was far from lenient with most of the culprits.

Notably, Taulant was one of four players to get sent off on Sunday, May 7, as Basel succumbed to a 2-0 defeat.

While sending offs are fairly normal in football, it was how Taulant Xhaka was sent off that went viral on social media.

As reported on Sunsport, Taulant Xhaka was shown a second yellow card for a headbutt on Zurich player Nikola Katic’s chest.

He walked down the tunnel, typically distraught, but was called back to the pitch, much to his delight.

However, his return to the pitch was not for the reason he was anticipating, as the referee had reviewed the incident and deemed it worthy of a straight red card.

Xhaka was expectedly furious with the decision as he walked back down the tunnel flaring his arms in the air in frustration.

Like brother, like brother

It is noteworthy that red card offences seem to run in the Xhaka household.

Granit Xhaka, who joined Arsenal, has 79 yellow cards and five red cards to his name.

The Arsenal man, who is Taulant’s younger brother, has a reputation of being fiery on the pitch and can sometimes emerge with ill-timed tackles.

Meanwhile, Taulant Xhaka took to Instagram to apologize to his teammates after the defeat.

”I would like to take this opportunity to apologise in all form for my suspension from last night,” he wrote.

Champions League's three controversial calls

Sports Brief also reported on 3 interesting incidents in Champions League history that were subject to controversy.

This came after Manchester City’s 1-1 draw against Real Madrid on Tuesday, May 9.

Kevin De Bruyne had just scored a thunderbolt to equalise proceedings. Nothing wrong with the Belgian's shot, only that a few seconds earlier, Bernardo Silva had retrieved the ball after it had crossed the line for a throw in, but the officials failed to spot it.
