  • Gyan remains the country's all-time leading scorer from two successful decades

Deputy General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association, Alex Asante has stated that former captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan is the most committed player to ever play for the national team.

Gyan played for the Ghanaian national team for almost two decades, starting as a teenager and ultimately becoming the captain of the Black Stars.

Although he could not win major silverware for his country, he played a pivotal role in all of the country's World Cup appearances and remains the continent's leading scorer at the tournament - with six goals in three tournaments.

"Asamoah Gyan for me is the most committed player I have ever seen playing for the Black Stars," he told Asempa FM, as quoted by Footballghana.com.

To emphasise his point, Asante gave an interesting anecdote.

"There was a game the Black Stars [were] supposed to play. Gyan trained with the team and after arriving at the team hotel, his knee suddenly got swollen and the entire [team was] surprised."

The GFA second-in-command explained how Gyan effectively sacrificed his health to be fit for a crucial game.

"Dr Baba was the team doctor at the time and he took Gyan to a room... We all could hear Gyan screaming and crying because the team doctors were trying to get him fit for the game and despite the pain, he played the game even though he was not fit."

Asante said Gyan's dedication and commitment to the national team set him ahead of any others who played for the Black Stars.

The former captain is Ghana's all-time leading scorer with 51 goals from 109 matches.
