Former Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld recently received a sickening message on social media after his team’s victory over Genk.

Royal Antwerp beat Genk 2-1 on Sunday, bringing them closer to the league title, with Toby Alderweireld among the scorers on the day.

But the win came with some negativity, as the 34-year-old,  who left Tottenham in 2021, was abused online by an irate fan.

According to AP, Toby shared a screenshot of the message online, which said something about his daughter, and the irate fan appeared to suggest Royal Antwerp “cannot win without the ref”.

Along with the post, the former Tottenham man shared the caption:

'Everything has limits. I can take quite a bit, but threatening my family is beyond me.’
'I don't understand why you write this and what you want to achieve with this.'

Genk’s response

In response, Royal Antwerp’s rivals on Sunday, condemned the abuse, as they released a statement.

'As a club, we explicitly distance ourselves from this,' they said in a statement.

Talk Sport further reports that Alderweireld will likely file a complaint against his abuser.

In his prime, the centre-back spent six years with Tottenham before eventually leaving in 2021 to join Qatari side Al-Duhail where he would have a brief stint before returning to his homeland.

With Royal Antwerp, Alderweireld has helped them maintain a lead at the top of the table, and with four matches to go, they enjoy a one point advantage over Genk.
