FootballNedbank Cup: Kaizer Chiefs Denied Clear Penalty Against Orlando Pirates
- There was a big moment during last Saturday's Nedbank Cup semfinal encounter between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at Soccer City
- The ball struck one of the Pirates players on the arm inside the penalty area, though the referee did not award a spot kick
- Refereeing pundit Ace Ncobo was decisive in his thoughts about whether this was the correct decision or not
Kaizer Chiefs was denied a blatant penalty against Orlando Pirates last Saturday in the Nedbank Cup semifinal at Soccer City.
That is the opinion of former referee Andle 'VAR' Ncobo when discussing the incident when Buccaneers midfielder Kabelo Dlamini was hit on the arm by the ball inside the box when trying to block a Chiefs free kick.
Speaking on Extra Time last night, Ncobo said:
"Look at that. He has made his body bigger. He has got his body above armpit level. The ball touches his elbow in that instance and he is inside the penalty area. That should have been awarded as a penalty. What we consider these days in the Laws of the Game is NOT whether or not there is intention to handle the ball.

"Are you making your body bigger? Is the arm at a position that you pose a risk to yourself of handling the ball? Those are the two considerations that the referee should look at. [Dlamini] is not looking at the ball, but he is making his body bigger, and in that instance, he is preventing the ball from flying through towards people that could have headed into the goal. That should have been a penalty."
Significantly, Pirates would open the lead a few minutes later courtesy of Kermit Erasmus, before going onto win the encounter 2-1 courtesy of a Sandile Mthethwa winner in extra time. This was after Yusuf Maart had equalised against his former club late in the second half.
Referee's Pirates sign explained
Elsewhere during this match, a conspiracy theory arose out of nothing, as reported by Sports Brief.
Did Bukayo Saka drop hints for Arsenal's lineup ahead of showdown against Man City?
FootballReferee Abongile Tom made a sign to the sidelines to indicate a serious injury.
Somehow and somewhere, this was interpreted as him being a Pirates fan.
