Wayne Rooney has predicted doom and gloom for Real Madrid ahead of their blockbuster UEFA Champions League semifinal showdown with Manchester City on Tuesday, May 9.

Real Madrid will meet the current Premier League leaders in the semifinal stage for the second successive season after both sides played out an epic tie across two legs last term, with the Spanish giants narrowly edging City 6-5 on route to their 14th European title.

While Man City have been in explosive form and on course to win the treble - Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League - Real Madrid have endured a topsy-turvy campaign, stuttering in La Liga but securing silverware in the Copa del Rey.

Writing in his column for The Times, the former Manchester United striker suggested the current Champions League holders will suffer a chastening defeat at the hands of Pep Guardiola's charges.

"Manchester City will not only beat Real Madrid in the semi-final of the Champions League, but they are going to destroy them," he wrote via MARCA.

The current DC United manager acknowledges Real Madrid's record and history in the competition but states that Man City are clear favourites to go through to the final, per Mirror.

"Of course, I could be wrong, but I think City are on another level," he added.

"You can never rule out a team with Real Madrid's experience and history, but I wouldn't bet on them. I think this is City's year.

Rodrygo hails 'unstoppable' Man City star

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes has singled out Manchester City striker Erling Haaland for praise ahead of Tuesday's Champions League semi-final first-leg tie.

Haaland is the top scorer in this year's Champions League, scoring 12 goals in just eight appearances this season.
