  • Martin Odegaard has been in incredible form for Arsenal this season under Mikel Arteta
  • The midfielder was on target on Sunday as the Gunners stunned Newcastle United 2-0
  • The goal was enough to help him shatter Frank Lampard's record for open goals in a single season

Arsenal skipper Martin Odegaard has broken a stunning record by Frank Lampard following his incredible goal against Newcastle United.

Odegaard has been one of the key players in the Gunners' Premier League title charge this season.

The former Real Madrid midfielder continued his fine run of form on Sunday evening, May 7, as he helped Arsenal see off at St. James' Park.

Odegaard fired the visitors into the lead with a low-driven effort into the bottom corner to beat Nick Pope, who was in goal for Newcastle.

Fabian Schar's own goal in the 71st minute of the clash sealed a momentous win for Arsenal, who went just a point behind Man City in the title race.

Odegaard breaks Lampard record

The Sun reports that Odegaard's goal against the Magpies was enough to help him break Lampard's own record.

According to the publication, Lampard tallied 12 goals in his best single season for open-play goals during the 2009-10 season.

However, Odegaard shattered that record on Sunday, with the 24-year-old boasting 13 goals from open play.

The Arsenal skipper will be hoping to continue with his goalscoring form when his side takes on Brighton next Sunday, May 14.

The rise of Odegaard

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Martin Odegaard's first season at Arsenal was so ordinary that it shocked a few fans when Mikel Arteta decided to make his loan move from Real Madrid permanent.

And as if that wasn't enough, Arteta immediately made the 23-year-old the club's captain after previous issues with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Granit Xhaka.

It's fair to say that the naysayers have been silenced. Odegaard has been a true revelation for the Gunners as they pursue their first Premier League title since 2004.

For a club that has never lacked creative players before, Odegaard is on his way to replicating the kind of form Mesut Ozil had during his early years in North London. Or perhaps the likes of Thiery Henry or Dennis Bergkamp once the season ends.
