  • Pep Guardiola was fuming at Erling Haaland for leaving a penalty for Ilkay Gundogan
  • The German went on to miss the spot kick, and Leeds scored moments later to half the deficit to 2-1
  • Guardiola said later that Haaland, who is the current Premier League top scorer, was ‘too nice’ for leaving the penalty for Gundogan

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola did not appreciate a noble gesture from Erling Haaland after the Norwegian passed up a penalty to Ilkay Gundogan on Saturday, May 6.

Gundogan scored a brace in the first half to put the Citizens in control of the Premier League clash against Leeds United, who were playing their first game under new manager Sam Allardyce.

The home side had a chance to pull further away from their opponents after Phil Foden was felled in the box for a penalty.

Haaland, who has been the designated penalty taker for most of the season at Manchester City, was expected to take his league goal tally to 36. Still, the 22-year-old instead gave the spot kick to Gundogan so the midfielder could complete a rare hat trick.

Gundogan’s penalty ended up hitting the upright, completely evading the City attackers who were on deck to pounce on the rebound, as reported on The Mirror.

In the aftermath, cameras panned to Guardiola who was furiously ranting on the touchline, seemingly telling Haaland he should have been the one to take the penalty.

“Too nice”

Interestingly, Guardiola’s discontent was justified as Leeds pulled goal back through Rodrygo to set up a tense finale, but the Citizens managed to hang on to go four points clear at the top.

After the game, Guardiola said he “understood” why Haaland surrendered the penalty as he dubbed the Norwegian “too nice”.

"The game is not over. It shows how nice and generous Erling [Haaland] is. If it is 4-0 with 10 minutes left, OK. But at 2-0? Erling is the best penalty taker right now so he has to take it..." Guardiola said.
