  • Erling Haaland made Premier League history on Wednesday night with his strike against West Ham United
  • The goal saw the youngster become the first player to score 35 goals in a single EPL season
  • The Manchester City camp took some time to honour the forward shortly after the final whistle

Erling Haaland was on Wednesday night, May 3, the man of the moment as Manchester City demolished West Ham United 3-0 to return to the summit of the Premier League standings.

City had to wait until the second half to see off the Hammers, having failed to find a breakthrough in the first half of the match.

According to The Guardian, Nathan Ake broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, with the defender powering a downward header past Fabianski to make it 1-0.

Haaland doubled the hosts' advantage 20 minutes later before Phil Foden sealed the win with City's third with five minutes left on the clock.

However, it was the Norwegian who was at the centre of attention, given how momentous his goal was.

The Sun reports that the youngster's strike was enough to see him break a 28-year Premier League record, with the ex-Dortmund star becoming the first player ever to score 35 goals in a single EPL season.

The record was previously held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, who netted 34 goals each at one time in the English top flight.

Manchester City stars honour Haaland

Manchester City stars and staff used the occasion to honour Haaland shortly after the West Ham United clash, with the team mounting a guard of honour for the Norway international.

After the full-time whistle, Pep Guardiola set up the guard of honour for the top marksman in what was a touch of class from the Man City camp.

Pep went on to pay a glowing tribute to Haaland after the match, with the Spaniard hailing the forward as 'special.'

Haaland will be hoping to continue his goalscoring streak when City take on relegation-threatened Leeds United on Saturday, May 6.

Adebayo makes Haaland, Aguero comparison

Sports Brief earlier reported on former City striker Emmanuel Adebayo differentiating Haaland from Sergio Aguero, and his analysis appeared spot-on.

The Togolese veteran claimed Haaland is physical and combative against defenders, and he proved just that, bullying Rob Holding throughout the game.

The former Salzburg and Dortmund striker upped his game to a different level against the Gunners through link-up play and also turning provider for KDB.
