  • Mamelodi Sundowns' iffy form in the DStv Premiership continued on Wednesday evening
  • The runaway champions were held to a 2-2 draw by AmaZulu in a thriller out in KwaZulu-Natala
  • Amazingly, the visitors were 2-0 up at one point and appeared to be cruising to all three points when the home team pulled off an unlikely comeback

AmaZulu FC fought back to hold Mamelodi Sundowns to a 2-2 draw in a DStv Premiership match at Princess Magogo Stadium on Wednesday night.

The draw left Usuthu placed 11th on the league standings - six points above the relegation zone and they are set to face Lamontville Golden Arrows away on 13 May.

Masandawana, on the other hand, are placed at the top of the standings having already been crowned champions and they are set to face Marumo Gallants in Polokwane away on Saturday. Usuthu were the better side in the opening stages as they moved the ball around in Masandawana's half while looking for an opening in the Tshwane giants' defence.

However, the deadlock was broken by the visitors four minutes before the half-hour mark when Rally Bwalya pressed and he gave away possession in his own half. Gaston Sirino quickly set up Bongani Zungu who beat goalkeeper Jody February with a hard and low shot to make it 1-0 to Sundowns, who were leading at halftime.

A more entertaining half followed as Peter Shalulile netted his 12th league goal of the season in the 58th minute to make it 2-0 to Sundowns after being set up by Lebohang Maboe. However, the hosts responded by exerting pressure on Masandawana and they pulled one back when Ramahlwe Mphahlele netted to make it 2-1 in the 65th minute.

The comeback was completed in the 83rd minute when Junior Sere Dion netted with a thumping shot and the AmaZulu striker's goal ensured that the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

Pirates throw away points against Royal

Earlier, runners-up-to-be Orlando Pirates made the job of finishing behind Sundowns unnecessarily harder.

The Buccaneers had to settle for a point after conceding a last-minute equaliser against Royal AM at Orlando Stadium.
