Somalia Makes History at U17 Africa Cup of Nations after Draw Against Congo

Somalia secured their first-ever point at the Africa U17 Cup of Nations currently ongoing in Algeria, after drawing with the Republic of the Congo on Tuesday night.

The east African nation, who are making their first appearance at the youth competition, also scored their first-ever goal at the tournament in the same game.

Dini Dahir made history after scoring in the first half as Somalia took the lead in the 32nd minute.

The Republic of the Congo, who had dominated the game before conceding, responded after the break via Ayel Wumba Niati, per an official statement by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

For Somalia, the point keeps them in contention for a place in the next stage of the tournament. They will next face Senegal, who defeated host Algeria on Tuesday to qualify.

Somalia's U17 coach, Mohamed Amin discussed what was a competitive match with a good display from his team.

"The draw does not reflect the match on the pitch. But we have come out with good experience from this game," he said, as quoted by CAFOnline.
"We came to Algeria to try and win the tournament. That remains our goal, and we will try to correct it in the next match."

The east African nation lost their opening game against Algeria.

Nantes sack Algerian U17 star

Elsewhere, Sports Brief on Nantes sacking an Algerian player over his decision to join the Algerian Under-17 national team camp for the ongoing AFCON.

Last weekend, the U17 AFCON started in Algeria with 32 national teams fighting for the title and Younes Ben Ali saw this as a perfect chance to make his name.

However, it has been reported that his Ligue 1 club did not grant him permission to attend the U17 AFCON and has since begun proceedings to end his contract.

Ghanaian star wins Austrian Cup

Sports Brief also reported on Ghanaian forward, Mohammed Fuseini winning his first senior trophy with Austrian outfit, Sturm Graz.

The Austrian Bundesliga side defeated Rapid Wien 2-0 in the final of the OFB Cup to win the title for the sixth time in the club's history.

Fuseini joined Sturm Graz from Ghanaian youth side, Right to Dream Academy last summer and has made two appearances so far.
