  • The north Londoners came from two goals down to force a draw at the Tottenham Stadium
  • This was Mason’s first game in charge following the sacking of interim coach Cristian Stellini

Tottenham Hotspur’s caretaker manager, Ryan Mason made an interesting admission after his side came from two goals down against Manchester United on April 27.

The north Londoners trailed the game by two goals at half-time, with United looking to be on course for another victory thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

However, Pedro Porro launched a fightback with a close-range goal in the 56th minute, with Heung-Min son bringing the game level with a close-range finish after some neat work by Harry Kane, as reported on the BBC.

With Tottenham on the ascendancy after the two goals, it was interesting to see the side somehow take their proverbial foot off the gas to seemingly settled for a draw.

Mason explains why Spurs slowed

Speaking after the game, Ryan Mason, who had a few years as a Tottenham player before being forced into early retirement, admitted his side were too mentally exhausted to go looking for a winner.

"The second half, we kept pushing, had some real clear openings and maybe if we got the second goal earlier, we could have kept pushing," he said, as quoted by the Standard.

He believes to come from 2-0 down at the break to draw level was a positive they took from the game.

"I felt once we had got the second goal, the lads had sort of invested so much energy into it that we went a little bit flat and they took a little bit control of the game without really creating anything. To come off 2-2 off the back of going in 2-0 down at half time is a positive.”

Tottenham have had a turbulent season, which initially started positively but has seen their momentum falter at the turn of the year.

Things took a turn for the worse after their 3-3 draw against Southampton in March, a result that sent Antonio Conte into a tirade, calling out the club and players.

The Italian manager was dismissed in the following days and replaced by his assistant, Cristian Stellini, who did not fare any better as Tottenham boss.

Ten Hag explains substitutions

Sports Brief also reported on Erik ten Hag explaining his substitutions in the draw against Tottenham, which left fans and pundits confused.

With Man United still leading, the Dutch coach surprised many by withdrawing Jadon Sancho and Cristian Eriksen just after the hour mark.

The two were among the better performers on the night, with Fred and Anthony Martial taking their place. However, ten Hag has his reasons.
