  • Mikel Arteta has hinted the Premier League title race is not over despite Arsenal's humbling defeat to Manchester City
  • The Gunners' 4-1 loss at the Etihad Stadium saw them lose grip at the top of the standings, with their lead cut to two points
  • Arteta's men have not won any of their four most recent fixtures, including a surprising 3-3 draw against Southampton

Mikel Arteta is still optimistic that Arsenal can beat Manchester City to the Premier League crown this season.

The Gunners' Premier League title bid suffered yet another blow on Wednesday night, April 26, after they were demolished 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium by the reigning champions.

The defeat now mean the league leaders are winless in four of their most recent outings, with three other fixtures against Liverpool, West Ham, and Southampton ending in draws.

However, Arteta's charges were unable to put up a proper performance and subsequently dropped points yet again.

The Guardian reports Kevin De Bruyne was pivotal in City's huge win as he netted a double to inspire his side to victory.

John Stones and in-form attacker, Erling Haaland were also on the scoresheet, with Rob Holding scoring Arsenal's consolation.

The result cut Arsenal's deficit at the top to just two points, with the Gunners facing the prospect of losing their grip at the summit given City have a game in hand.

Arsenal boss Arteta remains hopeful

However, Arteta is still positive the title race is not yet decided, despite his side's humbling defeat away from home.

Speaking after the Man City clash, the Spaniard suggested there were five reasons why his side could still conquer the English top flight for the first time in close to two decades.

Arteta was subtly referring to the five games remaining before the season ends, with the former midfielder insisting anything can happen.

"Today is very difficult after the way we lost, but we have to stand up and look at the bigger picture and the fact that we're competing toe-to-toe with this team - it is incredible," Arteta told BT Sport, via Sportbible.

Arteta insisted Arsenal wanted to compete and would not give up.

"There are five games to go and anything can happen. I've seen a lot of things happen in more than 20 years and you have to believe that," he continued.

Rooney offers Arsenal his advice

Sports Brief previously reported on Wayne Rooney giving Arsenal his advice on what to do to ensure they come out victorious against Man City on Wednesday.

The Man United legend highlighted Haaland as a significant challenge and pointed out injured defender, William Saliba as the one to neutralise his threat.

With Arsenal currently struggling for form, Rooney said the Gunners needed to impose their own game on the Citizens if they were to claim a vital win.
