  • Football fans were critical of the refereeing in the Premier League once again on Saturday, April 22
  • This was after an incident during the Fulham vs Leeds game where there was a seemingly obvious back pass
  • Fulham ran out 2-1 winners as their impressive season under Marco Silva continued

Fans worldwide were left scratching their heads at how the referee missed what looked like an apparent back pass during the Fulham vs Leeds game.

In the encounter at Craven Cottage, the first half was fairly eventless and the most outstanding moment involved some controversy with Fulham captain Tim Ream and goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Ream got the ball at the back and returned it to Leno, and the former Arsenal man took a touch before picking the ball up with his hands amid pressure from Leeds United’s  Brenden Aaronson.

What does the rulebook say?

According to TheUKrules, the incident between Leno and his captain should have warranted an indirect free kick inside the box.

The new Premier League rules, implemented in 1992, state that a goalkeeper cannot grab the ball with his hands from a deliberate pass from his own player. Doing so automatically results in an indirect free kick for the opponents.

Interestingly, no Leeds player appeared to appeal after the incident, leaving fans online confused.

“Haha Fulham just casually playing a backpass and no leeds player complaining” One fan said.
"Just an obvious backpass there between Fulham and Leeds and nothing done by officials. Astonishing." Another added.

Sports Brief did a quick spot check on the incident and determined that despite it being marginal, the referee got it correctly as the ball took a slight nick off a Leeds attacker on its way back to the goalkeeper.

How the game went

As far as the game was concerned, it sparked to life in the second half as Harry Wilson gave Fulham the lead with a brilliant first-time finish.

Andreas Pereira then slotted in after some poor defending from Leeds, who pulled one back through a Joao Palhinha own goal.
