  • Something highly unusual happened during the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal encounter between Dondol Stars and Orlando Pirates at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane
  • Buccaneers defender Paseka Mako was seen stepping into the Stars team huddle where coaches were screaming instructions during a water break
  • The hosts either ignored Mako, or were genuinely aware that the diminutive player was there spying on them

Paseka Mako is both brave and very cheeky.

During a Nedbank Cup quarterfinal match between Dondol Stars and Orlando Pirates, the diminutive defender was spotted standing in a Stars huddle. The host team at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane was in the middle of receiving instructions from the technical staff when Mako came to spy.

Amazingly, none of the Stars contingent noticed him as was pointed out by SuperSport commentators Thabiso Tema and colour analyst Phumudzo Manenzhe. It is also possible that they were aware of Mako, but did not care that he was there.

While this was unfolding, the cameras cut to the Pirates teams huddle, which suggests that Mako WAS told to eavesdrop on their opponents.

As for the match, Thembinkosi Lorch put Pirates into the lead in the 55th minute, before Tebogo Makungo equalised two minutes later. Orlando Pirates would then go on to win 5-4 on penalties after both sides could not get the winner in regulation and extra time.

Mako knocked out in collision

Almost a year ago to the day, Mako was involved in something far more serious at the same venue, as was reported by Sports Brief.

Mako was knocked out accidentally by his goalkeeper Richard Ofori's knee. The incident happened during an extended injury time of 11 additional minutes. This had come about because of a floodlight failure that had occurred some 20 minutes earlier, which led to a delay.

Ofori had come out to clear the ball with Pirates looking to press for the winner, when he collided with Mako as he jostled to get to the ball while a Baroka FC player was about to pounce on it.

The referee immediately blew the whistle, beckoning frantically to medical staff to get on to the pitch as quickly as possible.
